ok so, heres the situation,

My friends had this argument over this and the argument has been going on for about 2 weeks and has been passed to other people making more arguments!! so i'll explain as best i can,

So jess and helen where sitting down and helen says to jess "can you please pass me the straightner's?" (as in hair straighter's) and jess said "dont you mean straighter?" they then had a huge argument over calling them straighter's or a straightner??

What would you say? i would say straightner's, because if you where asking for some tongs for example, you wouldnt say pass the tong coz technicly theres two tongs that make it, isnt that the same with a straightner?

SO confusing lol

Your analogy of the "tongs" seems to me to be the best solution to the terms of the debate. The only hair straighteners I've seen are the kinds where hair is placed between TWO heated pieces of curved metal. One possible exception is if Helen were using a clothes iron. Then it would be singular.
There are many burning debates in the moral and political arenas. People who love to debate might pick one of these to occupy their time and debating skills.
In the arena of grammar, granted, this tongs straighteners debate is worthy of as much as five minutes. Anything longer than that should be referred to the "What is this friendship worth?" debate.
